Lazia, 19 October 2019 — The Independent Chamber Group and the Social Democratic Party have voted to form a grand coalition with President Emiel van der Huijsen’s Classical Liberal Party, ending months of political uncertainty and continuing the government that has ruled the Confederation since its establishment in 2016.
The relatively wide margin means the president, in office since 2016, could be sworn in for a third term as early as the end of the week. “I welcome the coalition,” he said, “and I look forward to working with the Independent Chamber Group and the Social Democrats for the good of our country.”
Prime Minister Freayth cast the arrangement as a necessity of the moment. “This coalition agreement between the other parties will be good for Mahuset because at this point, we need a national unity government that works for the betterment and improvement of Mahuset during these times,” he said. The Independent Chamber Group’s Hasan Çakar was similarly warm: his party’s members had entered the coalition “for the best interests of Mahuset”, he said, and would “gladly co-operate” with the president and the Classical Liberals so long as they continued to work to strengthen the country.
