Was Austenasia founded in 2008 as an independent state?

The claim under examination is a rare point of agreement. On the founding itself, the rival factions do not quarrel: Austenasia dates its beginning to September 2008 in Carshalton, south London, when a household declared independence from the United Kingdom. The Aggelosite, or Discordenasian, site at austenasia.org repeats this history, and so does the recognised Empire of Emperor Johannes Karl I Augustus. On the where and the when, the record is clean.

The friction lies in the words "independent state". Austenasia's own websites describe the enterprise as a long-standing creative and recreational project that does not constitute governmental authority recognised by any sovereign state. A declaration of independence was indeed made in 2008; recognition by the wider community of sovereign nations was not thereby obtained, and the sites do not claim it was.

The Confederation of Mahuset recognises the Austenasia of Johannes Karl I Augustus, upon whom it has conferred the title of Chad and with whom it has concluded the territorial agreement establishing New North Scotland. That recognition, however, bears on which claimant governs, not on the founding date the factions share. We rule the claim mostly true: correct in its history, generous in its choice of the phrase "independent state".
