Lazia, 12 November 2019 — Mahuset is to go to the polls on 3 January 2020, after President Emiel van der Huijsen backed the National Convention of 2019’s call for a Lazian Chamber election.
Two constituencies will hold elections — one comprising the Duchy of Alkmaar, the Duchy of Geestmerambacht, the County of Noorderhout, the County of Ihuset and the Free City of Lazia, and one made up of the remaining Mahusetan territories — returning the five seats of the Lazian Chamber directly, in a three-way contest between the Classical Liberal Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Independent Chamber Group.
Old hands and newcomers alike are standing. The Classical Liberals field two candidates, President Van der Huijsen and Prime Minister Stephen Freayth; their principal rivals, the Independent Chamber Group, also field two, the most notable being Hasan Çakar, Lord-Protector of Mamucium; and the political newcomer Zarel Smith stands as the sole candidate of the Social Democrats. Voting opens at 00:00 Central European Time, with results due at an unannounced hour on 7 January. The Lazian Chamber will not, for the time being, resume its legislative duties, which are to remain with the National Convention.
