Head of state marks 20 years since the assassination of Pim Fortuyn

The head of state reflects on the legacy of the Dutch politician.

Lazia, 6 May 2022 — Chad President Emiel van der Huijsen has marked the twentieth anniversary of the assassination of the Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn. He described Fortuyn as "the first Dutch politician to successfully marry the Dutch tradition of liberalism with right-wing populism, criticism of islam and multiculturalism, nationalism and even some left-wing cultural stances while distancing itself from the broader European far-right … at the time".

Chad President Emiel van der Huijsen marked the twentieth anniversary of the killing of the Dutch politician, whom he praised as the first to marry Dutch liberalism with a right-wing populism while keeping his distance from the broader European far right. The commemoration reflected the strong Dutch political sensibility that ran through the Confederation’s public life.
