Mahuset reshuffles its national symbols, from sausage roll to snowdrop

Lazia, 14 July 2026 — The Confederation of Mahuset has reshuffled its register of national symbols, confirming the sausage roll as the national dish and setting out two dozen further designations spanning food, wildlife, minerals and one national medicine.

At the table, the sausage roll is joined by walnut bread as the national bread and by extra-mature North Holland Gouda as the national cheese, with particular recognition for the Gouda Holland and Beemster varieties. The Oreo is named the national biscuit, honey salmiakki liquorice the national sweet, and iced tea the national drink.

From the land, the register names the redcurrant as the national fruit, the potato as the national crop, rye and buckwheat as the national grains, kale as the national brassica variety and sambal as the national condiment.

In the natural world, cats are confirmed as the national animal — the calico as the national cat colouring — alongside the Frisian stabijhoun as the national dog breed. The European robin is the national bird, the three-spined stickleback the national fish and the Atlantic cod the national food fish, while the European honeybee takes the place of national insect.

The snowdrop is designated the national flower and the European alder the national tree, with moissanite as the national mineral. Cycling is named the national exercise and dabbing the national dance, and the register even reaches the microscopic, naming Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus as the national microbe.

Chief among the medical designations is paracetamol, named the national medicine. The register's compilers noted, without apparent irony, that the remedy was also considered of some assistance in maintaining a list of national symbols this comprehensive.
