Mamucium, 1 February 2020 — President Emiel van der Huijsen has congratulated the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, praising his implementation of the will expressed in the 2016 referendum.
Britain left the EU the previous night, at 23:00 UTC, after three years of heavy debate and repeated attempts by pro-European parties to thwart the process. It now enters a transitional period of roughly eleven months, during which it remains within a customs union and single market with the EU while the two negotiate their future trade and travel arrangements; Britain is also expected to pursue new trade deals elsewhere, most notably with the United States.
“I’m incredibly happy to see the United Kingdom finally leave the European Union and assert its sovereignty once more,” the president’s message to Mr Johnson read. “I believe that Britain’s departure from the European Union will end up benefitting it long term, and I have no reason to doubt that the message the British government sent — that of peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations — is a genuine one. ‘Make leave not war’ might be a valid way to describe it.”
