Lazia, 3 July 2019 — The National Convention of 2019 has approved a proposal by President Emiel van der Huijsen to bar any current or future Mahusetan administration from applying to join the intermicronational organisation known as the Grand Unified Micronational, or GUM.
The measure, which some may regard as extreme, passed unopposed — anti-GUM sentiment has long been widespread among Mahusetans — and rested on a charge that the GUM is an “elitist” and “undemocratic” institution. It cited a run of recent controversies: conflicts involving the members “Baustralia” and “Quebec”, the admission of a member state claiming sovereignty over the entire world, and the use by a GUM vice-chair candidate, Eryn Lewis, of a Discord server closely tied to the organisation to tell other micronationalists to kill themselves.
The GUM has drawn criticism throughout its existence for elitism and for sustaining an alleged clique within the MicroWiki community, with some members accused of promoting a revisionist account of the 2011–2014 MicroWikia community and of hostility towards younger participants.
The decision came only days after Van der Huijsen became Chair of the Konmalehth, and may be read as a sign that Mahuset intends to make itself an integral part of that organisation and to distance itself from the communities it had moved in before. The president has already sought to deepen co-operation within the Konmalehth, including plans to turn the dormant Mahusetan press agency Independent General Press FM into a Konmalehth-wide body.
