Lazia, 23 February 2019 — The official Mahusetan account on YouTube has subscribed to PewDiePie, at the time of writing the platform’s most-subscribed channel, in what may be read as a de facto endorsement of his holding that position against the Indian channel T-Series.
The Mahusetan subscription followed a brief moment in which T-Series overtook PewDiePie at the top of the rankings. The two had for some months been locked in a mock battle for the crown, which some cast as a front in a wider online culture war — on one side the creators who had built their own channels over YouTube’s history, on the other the corporations using the platform to advertise content from elsewhere.
The contest drew a striking roster of supporters for PewDiePie, among them the YouTubers Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Logan Paul and MrBeast, the Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, the Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and the United Kingdom Independence Party.
