Mamucium, 19 July 2019 — The National Convention of 2019 has dissolved the Queer Social Democrats, the dormant LGBT wing of the centre-left opposition Social Democratic Party, following the inactivity that set in after the departure of XO in May.
The sub-organisation was founded in December 2018, during a period of tense debate over LGBT issues in Mahuset — among them the rejection of the Non-Binary Recognition Act and the prohibition of the “Purple Friday” awareness day — as a front to protect what its leader, XO, regarded as human rights. It played a large part in the rift between President Van der Huijsen and XO that led ultimately to the latter’s departure, and drew criticism from opponents, chiefly the president and the Classical Liberal Party, for pushing what they called “social justice warrior” agendas and divisive identity politics.
Since XO’s departure the body had existed in name only, its founder having been its sole member as it failed to gain traction, while the Social Democratic Party itself has largely collapsed as the vocal force it once was. “I believe the dissolution of the Queer Social Democrats to be for the best,” the president said. “Considering the fact it already was dissolved in all but name, I consider it to be in the best interests of Mahuset for it — an organisation which arguably only pushed divisive identity politics — to be disbanded.”
