Lazia, 13 December 2019 — President Emiel van der Huijsen has congratulated the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on his landslide victory in the 2019 British general election, which returns him to Downing Street with a commanding majority.
Mr Johnson’s Conservative and Unionist Party took around 44 per cent of the vote and a majority of 48 seats in the House of Commons, defeating Labour in many of its traditional northern strongholds. The election followed years of deadlock over Brexit, the minority government having been unable to pass legislation to enact Britain’s withdrawal; Mr Johnson, in office since July, had secured a revised deal only to be prevented by the opposition from enacting it.
“I’m incredibly happy to see the British public granting the Conservative Party a new electoral mandate,” the president said, “and look forward to seeing the United Kingdom finally leaving the European Union.” He had endorsed Mr Johnson before the vote, and has been a vocal supporter of British withdrawal from the EU.
