Lazia, 25 November 2019 — President Emiel van der Huijsen has congratulated Hong Kong’s “pro-democracy camp” — the loose coalition of pro-democratic politicians and organisations in the territory — on its decisive victory in the city’s local elections.
The camp took roughly 57 per cent of the vote and the great majority of seats on the local district councils, winning 389 of 452 and gaining 265. The election came amid the protests that had gripped the autonomous territory — begun in opposition to an extradition bill before broadening into a pro-democracy movement — which had met harsh crackdowns by local security forces and persistent fears of intervention by the People’s Liberation Army.
The result has been widely read as a message to the administration of Carrie Lam and to the Chinese Communist Party that the people of Hong Kong support the protesters’ aims and oppose the crackdowns of the Communist and loyalist authorities.
