Institute confirms BBEF acronym, finds Hasani and Hasanistani equal

Lazia, 27 August 2026 — The Joint Vetrisphere Linguistics Institute has ruled on two questions referred to it this month, confirming that the official acronym of the Batyr Bloc Economic Forum is “BBEF” and holding that the terms “Hasani” and “Hasanistani” are equal and interchangeable, and that neither is a slur. The questions were referred separately and answered in a single document.

The forum was constituted only recently under the Batyr Bloc, giving institutional form to the founding aim of mutually supporting the national economic development of the member states, and fellows were asked to fix a short form for use in communiqués, agendas and the minutes of the bloc’s summits. The alternatives “BBEcF” and “BatEF” were considered and set aside as, in the words of the determination, “ungainly in print and worse aloud”.

The determination records that the resemblance of the acronym, spoken as a single syllable, to the Dutch word “bef” was raised during consultation. The institute notes that “bef” in ordinary usage denotes the white neckband worn by advocates and by members of the clergy, and that officials consulted on the matter described a second, colloquial sense of the word as “unsuitable for the minutes”. The institute did not elaborate, and said it saw no occasion to. It advises that the abbreviation be spoken as four separate letters, written without full stops, and given in full at first mention in official correspondence.

The determination expresses the institute’s satisfaction with the outcome. “The forum has been named with due regard for acronymic dignity,” it states. “The institute observes only that the standard is not universally kept, and that a convention which reads its initials aloud before adopting them spares itself a great deal of subsequent correspondence.” The remark was taken as a reference to the CAEMCIM Convention, the Aggelosite-aligned anti-diplomatic convention whose acronym drew criticism in May for a “strange and unfortunate” apparent pronunciation, which fellows of the institute judged to sound like “came-cum”.

On the second question, referred by the Van der Huijsen-Çakar Press Association in the course of settling its house style, the institute determined that “Hasani” and “Hasanistani” are of equal standing as demonyms of the Sublime State of Hasanistan, and that either may be used in any register without distinction of meaning. It held further that neither term is a slur, and that neither carries, or has ever carried, a pejorative sense in Mahusetan usage.

The institute set out the basis of its standing in the matter. Hasani is one of the three official languages of Hasanistan, alongside English and Turkish, and on 20 November 2021 the National Convention of 2019 designated Hasani and Turkish as recognised minority languages of the Confederation of Mahuset. Both forms are already current in Hasanistan’s own usage, in Mahusetan official correspondence and in this newspaper, and the institute states that the determination ratifies existing practice rather than altering it. The document describes the two demonyms as “the property of those who speak them before they are the property of any institute”.

The determination takes effect immediately and has been transmitted to the governments of Mahuset, Hasanistan and Brennonia. “Those who have used either term have been right all along,” a fellow of the institute said. “Our closest ally should never be placed in the position of choosing between its own names.”
