The day honours the work and achievements of the Lord-Stadtholder-Emeritus, and has its origins in the early years of the state. From 2012 until 2014, when the head of state held the title of King, it was observed as King's Day.
With the transition to the republican office of Lord-Stadtholder the celebration was retained under its present name, reframed to mark the founding role and the continuing contribution of the Lord-Stadtholder-Emeritus to the construction of Mahuset's political and civic institutions.
Public festivities took place in several localities, with speeches, small gatherings and digital commemorations of milestones in the development of the state. Particular emphasis fell on the period of institutional consolidation in the early 2010s, when the foundations of the present civic identity were laid.
Van der Huijsen drew the celebrations to a close privately, underlining the personal as well as the political dimension of the occasion. No new announcements were made, and the manner of the closing was read as a gesture of respect and continuity linking the present office to its own origins.
The observance has become one of the more distinctive fixtures in the Mahusetan civic calendar. It is neither a holiday of general festivity nor a purely political commemoration, but combines elements of both, recalling the history of the Confederation while reinforcing the authority of its present institutions.
