Lazia, 18 July 2016 — The Confederation of Mahuset has established diplomatic relations with the Abeldane Empire and with the Brändholmer Republic, concluding both treaties on the same day and in each case at the request of the other party.

Both treaties were concluded at the other side's request, and the Abeldane understanding would freeze within a year over the affair known in Mahuset as Spygate.

The Abeldane text was drawn up by President Emiel van der Huijsen after an approach from the Abeldane side, and it opened what would become one of the Confederation’s more significant early partnerships. It was not, however, an easy one throughout.
Relations froze altogether the following year, when the Mahusetan head of state was banned from the Abeldane national chat over accusations — which Mahuset called false — that he had spied for the Shorewellese Empire. The episode is remembered in the Confederation as Spygate.
The treaty with the Brändholmer Republic, likewise concluded at Brändholm’s own request, was settled on the same day as the recognition of the Abeldane Empire. Both belong to a steady widening of Mahuset’s diplomatic network through the summer of 2016.
