Office for Architecture and Design established

Lazia, 14 September 2025 — The government has created the Office for Architecture and Design (Ambt voor Architectuur en Design) under the Ministry for General Affairs, to coordinate policy on design, heraldry and civic symbolism.

The new body will exercise supervisory authority over two existing institutions: the College of Arms, which registers heraldic devices, and the Mahusetan Institute for Vexillology, which oversees the study and design of national and civic flags. Both continue to exist, but their activities now fall within the framework of the new office and are coordinated at ministerial level.

By placing the college and the institute under a single umbrella, the government intends to improve consistency in the visual and symbolic representation of the state. Officials noted that heraldry, vexillology and architectural design often intersect, and that a central office gives greater coherence to the way national and civic imagery is developed, recorded and presented.

The office will also advise ministries and agencies on design and representation more broadly, including the creation of ceremonial insignia and the architectural standards applied to public buildings.

In that respect the new body goes beyond recordkeeping and takes on a role in shaping the aesthetic presentation of Mahusetan governance. Its creation forms part of the continuing reorganisation of state structures.
