'Time to crack open a cold one': Mahuset Day marks 14 years

Lazia, 29 May 2026 — The Confederation of Mahuset has marked Mahuset Day, its national day, with ceremonies and public events commemorating 14 years since the state was founded.

Mahuset Day is held each year to mark the founding of the state in 2012, when it was first established as a monarchy under a head of state who held the title of King. The country later became a republic, and in 2016 the five constituent states — Matsia, Alkmaar, Geestmerambacht, Noorderhout and Ihuset — joined with the Free City of Lazia to form the present Confederation.

This year's events were led by Chad Lord-Stadtholder Emiel van der Huijsen, who gave a formal address to the nation, describing the anniversary as "a moment to look back on 14 years of work, and on what that work has built". Flags were flown across the constituent states, and small gatherings, speeches and online commemorations were held throughout the day.

In his speech Chad Lord-Stadtholder Van der Huijsen said Mahuset had grown from "a small and uncertain project" into "a confederation with functioning institutions", and paid tribute to those who had served in the National Convention of 2019, the Lazian Chamber and the ministries.

His remarks were not entirely solemn. He joked that at 14 Mahuset was now "older than the average micronationalist", and that the milestone had earned the country the right to "crack open a cold one with the boys", before adding that it had built "rather more in fourteen years than certain far larger and far older organisations have managed in rather longer".

Public festivities were modest. Commemorative events were held in several official channels, and the Chadly Chancery, which administers the state's honours, marked the day with a number of ceremonial appointments.

Among those at the main gathering in Lazia was The Right Honourable Gentlenyan Thor, Lord-Mouser to the Executive Office, whose attendance the chancery said was "in keeping with the dignity of the day".

Closing his address, the Lord-Stadtholder said the anniversary should be seen "not as an endpoint, but as a waypoint", and expressed the hope that Mahuset's institutions would "endure, mature and serve the people for many years to come".
