Is the Courant van Lazia neutral?

Lazia, 26 August 2026 — A claim has circulated that the Courant van Lazia and other titles associated with the Publieke Omroep Stichting (POS) and the Van der Huijsen-Çakar Press Association are run to a secret agenda. It appears in community commentary, most often as a joke and occasionally in earnest. The claim concerns this newspaper, and the Courant van Lazia has examined the record, its own included.

The paper’s editorial standards are not private. They are set out in the published Style Guide, which states that “our first commitment is to accuracy and even-handedness” and that “we let the facts speak, and we do not editorialise in our news reporting; comment and opinion are labelled as such”, adding: “Where we get something wrong, we correct it plainly.” The ownership is equally a matter of record. The Courant van Lazia belongs to the POS, the state broadcasting foundation established on 13 October 2021, which is itself a partner and founding member of the Van der Huijsen-Çakar Press Association; the Batyr Times is also a member, and shared material is re-edited by each receiving title. The paper’s About page puts the position in a single line: the paper is bound to the Confederation but keeps its editorial judgement its own.

The “secret agenda” formulation began as a joke in community commentary and is still repeated more often in that spirit than in earnest, which is why it is rated as originating in satire rather than placed on the true-to-false scale. What the joke gestures at is another matter, and it deserves an honest answer. Nobody is truly neutral. Micronationalism is a small community with heavy overlap between citizenries, and the same people appear in several states, in several institutions and on several mastheads at once. That overlap is a structural fact rather than a conspiracy, but it is a fact, and a reader who keeps it in mind is doing nothing unreasonable. What this paper can offer is disclosure of what it is rather than a claim to an independence its situation could not support.
